Traditional Festivals in Barcelona
You are never far away from a fiesta in Barcelona, a city that really knows how to throw a party.
Here we have listed the main celebrations. Many fall on holidays, so please note that services such as banks, shops, museums and even some restaurants may be shut.
Dates for some festivals vary each year so if you are interested in a particular event, please ask us for the latest details or check out the information in English under the culture section of the Barcelona city council web page: (http://www.bcn.es/english/ihome.htm).
JANUARY 5th This is the night children around Spain wait all year for. Join the happy crowds lining central Barcelona's main streets to welcome the arrival of Los Reyes Magos - the Three Kings (aka the Three Wise Men). Enjoy the cabalgada (parade), catch a caramel, share the magic and experience some Spanish culture.
FEBRUARY Carnival! Time to put on a costume and party! More great parades, including the "Gran Rúa", through Barcelona streets and the "Carnavalada" parade through Barceloneta. Not quite Rio but lots of fun! Many discos hold best fancy dress competitions.
For the most flamboyant and rioutous parade head to Sitges, the Gay village (about 30 mins by train from Barcelona). Carnival usually runs for 1-2 weeks until Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts. (Shrove Tuesday falls on February 28 in 2006.)
